Joe Cool or Pet Smart

Your pooch wakes you up for that morning walk. As you wander sleepily to the door with leash in hand, you open the door to the beautiful morning sun. You grab your cap and shades; you and Spot are out the door ready to do whatever is necessary. But wait! Did you forget something? Spot’s shades!

Sounds a bit over zealous to don a cap and shades on a dog? Not at all. In fact, dog’s eyes are much more sensitive to light than we are. If he’s squinting while looking up at you, chances are sunglasses will be greatly appreciated.

Studies now show that dogs are just as prone to the same eye diseases as humans. Additionally, Pannus, a condition that inflames the corneas, tends to affect certain breeds. This is especially important for Labs, German Shepards, Border Collies and Poodles. Owners of Dachshund, Huskies and Greyhounds should also be cautious regarding their pet’s vision. Proper eye gear can quite possibly make a world of difference.

If you live in sunny Florida, you may have already seen a few Joe Cools, but don’t forget the times you had to strain to see due to the light reflected off of snow. Remember, if you squint, he squints. Extreme altitudes, wind and debris are also factors to consider when protecting your favorite family member. Does she ride in the back of the truck or sticks her head out the window? Goggles would definitely be an asset for her. Plus she would look absolutely stunning!

In choosing pet goggles, make sure the package is clearly marked 100% UV (ultraviolet) protection. A large variety of styles and colors are available to suit whatever fashion statement you wish to make. Pet shops are starting to carry these needed accessories as people become more aware of UV damage, but most are purchased online.

And yes, size does matter. There are many sizes simply based on the dog’s weight. Each set offers adjustable straps covered in soft elastic material. There’s cushion around the rims and the lenses are interchangeable.

Before you slap those new shades on, pulling the leash to get Baby out of the house before Nature takes over, be sure to introduce these strange contraptions to her. Although she will enjoy the freedom of vision while lapping the car window breezes, she’ll need to understand what’s going on.

First, let her smell the new goggles and start to become familiar with them. Then, adjust the straps and lenses for a snug, but comfortable fit. If she’s scratching at them, maybe it’s a little too tight. Loosen them up a bit. Take walks and try to put them on every time she goes out. It won’t be long before she gets excited when she sees you reaching for her shades.
