How To Raise A Healthy Dog – Becoming pet-smart

If you are anything like me, you want to protect your loved ones and keep them happy and safe.

I am a confirmed, dog lover. I cannot remember, not having a couple of pooches in our home. Growing up with pets and kids, under my feet, was as natural as, mom being pregnant every two years. Being raised in a large, Catholic family can be like that, sometimes!

I believe, how to raise a healthy dog, is a lot like raising healthy children. My pets are a part of my family and I want them happy and healthy.

Being pet-smart, is being tuned in and aware of your pets needs. I find, it is a balance. The trips to the vet’s office, as needed, the right dog training, as well as the right diet.

I love that show, “The Dog Whisperer”. I have learned a lot about my pets’, body language. Now I can talk to them and they understand me better!

I have come to believe, we can all be guilty of over spoiling our dogs. I have also learned, my pooches are most happy, with me as the boss.

So often, problems will surface when pets take the lead and believe, they are running the show, when actually, what they really need, are clear set boundaries. Your pet will actually respect you for taking the lead away from him, or her.

Another important part of raising a well adjusted, healthy dog, is diet. You wouldn’t allow your kids to live on a McDonald’s diet, would you? Well, your pet is no different and has special needs, for maintaining a healthy diet.

Recently, we lost one of our dogs. My other pets got sick, but my oldest, tragically died.

My vet could not isolate the problem in time. By the time I noticed their was a real problem, it was too late.

Plain and simple, our dogs were food poisoned from over the counter, major brand, dog food.

When I discovered, what the pet food industry had done, I looked closer and discovered, I could no longer trust any of the pet food that was being sold down aisle 8, at my supermarket.

I have now found resources and tips, not just from my vet, but others, that really care about pets; what is healthy for my dogs to eat and how to keep them safe from disease.
